Al's Finger Lickin Good BBQ
IDK what I think about when I go to Florida…Tampa specifically. If you’d ask my husband, Booker, he would say fishing, and I suppose I do make an unconscious point of having seafood at least once while there. It’s not BBQ thats for sure (because I’m a Texan). My husband was introduced to this place during one of his work trips. He’s been frequenting Tampa pretty often over the last 10years, and had until then, never heard of Al’s. He could not stop raving about it.
Al’s is located in an unassuming yellow house across the Railroad tracks, right after you pass E. 5th Avenue in the Ybor City area of Tampa. The large smoker, and the various chickens (and Roosters) roaming around the area are the first indicators that you are in the right spot. Al’s specializes in the “Tennessee Style” of BBQ which is a combination of a dry rub, and then finishing with a hot or regular style of BBQ sauce, which is optional. Brisket is my favorite, so it tends to be my “tester” meat whenever I try a new BBQ spot; not everyone can make great Brisket. I must say that I was impressed. The service was great as well. Close nit, and still family run by Al himself, and a combination of what has be family and friends.
#protip: Tia’s TGIF Mac & Cheese is THE thing to get at Al’s. However, it is only served on Friday’s and is gone by around noon.
